Our Beginning: A Serendipitous Journey

Ragan and Christi Bond, married at 20 and Texas State graduates, embarked on an unexpected path into the coffee roasting business. After Ragan's 15-year career as a commodities trader, the couple relocated from Houston to the small town of Brenham, Texas. In 2001, Christi and her sister opened a local coffee shop, Main Street Coffee & Trading/Independence Coffee Co. Ragan soon began roasting coffee in his garage for their shop, producing 1,800 lbs. in the first year on a 10 lb. Ambex roaster.

Our Growth: Expanding the Passion

In 2018, Christi and Ragan opened a specialty coffee and tea retail destination, Black Truck '48 Coffee & Tea Market, named after the 1948 Ford truck they used for coffee delivery. This is depicted on the Independence Coffee bags. In 2019, the Bonds were recognized as the SBA Persons of the Year for Texas. With a growing team of 32, they custom-crafted and roasted a remarkable 700,000 lbs. of coffee that year. Continuing their progress, Independence Coffee Co. is now replacing their single-serve cups with new coffee pods.

Although a small roastery, Independence Coffee Co. sees this as a true advantage. Their hands-on approach allows them to cater to both beginner and seasoned coffee enthusiasts. Their coffees are packaged within hours of roasting, often while still warm, ensuring maximum freshness. This commitment to freshness and tight distribution enables same-day delivery to select customers.

The Independence Roast: Perfecting the Process

Independence has a team of only three roasters, including their original roaster who has trained the other two in all aspects of roasting and blending. This ensures consistency, as each batch is roasted the same way, allowing customers to enjoy the same roast characteristics every time. Unlike large-batch roasters, the 'Independence Roast' uses time and temperature to guide each roast through several stages, resulting in a deep-roasted coffee that enhances the overall experience.

Lasting Freshness and Commitment to Community

The 50-count cases of Independence Coffee are individually wrapped and flushed with nitrogen, giving them a one-year expiration date. The packaging also clearly identifies each coffee variety. This makes the coffee an excellent choice for offices or gatherings with family and friends.

Beyond their exceptional coffee, Independence Coffee Co. is committed to giving back to their local community. They have partnered with the Baylor Park Project, the Brenham High School Special Needs Program, and the Boys & Girls Club of Washington County, supporting various initiatives that positively impact their community.
